Quality and other technical information related to this item:

Identifying who should be included as someone supervised proved more difficult than providing the number of people supervised. Some teachers included their students. Fifteen percent reported supervising the work of others but did not indicate the number of people supervised directly. These respondents might have indicated a number in the item "supervised through subordinates." The reinterview data found a third changed the number supervised at sub-question "a" ("supervised directly"), but most changes were small. With respect to mode, CATI respondents, because they cannot see the questions, did not know that both the number "supervised through subordinate supervisors" and the number "directly supervised" would be asked. Thus, they sometimes estimated the two together at first. NSRCG interviewers also felt CATI respondents tended to inflate the number reported as "directly supervised."
