This 6-digit code is the public use version of B_JOB_CAT_NEW. It uses revised coding starting in 2003. This data element represents major occupation group and is derived from the first character of the SESTAT 6-character occupation code. The 6-character occupation codes use the following schema:

• the first position contains a numeric character which represents the major occupation group
• the first and second positions contain numerics which collectively represent the minor occupation group
• positions three through five contain numerics which represent the original occupation code
• the last position, position six, may or may not be used; if used, it contains a character to flag certain situations

This data element, based on B_PRINCIPAL_JOB_WEEKS, has been recoded from reported data so that confidential information about survey respondents is not revealed.

For the principal job, the number of hours worked during the week, recoded for public use.

This data element, based on B_PRINCIPAL_JOB_WKLY_HRS, has been recoded from reported data so that confidential information about survey respondents is not revealed. The reported data is grouped as follows:

• 1 = Less than or equal to 20 hours/week
• 2 = 20-35 hours/week
• 3 = 35-40 hours/week
• 4 = More than 40 hours/week
