Quality and other technical information related to this item:
General
For some surveys, the response for this data item was not obtained directly from the survey form, but was instead available from an administrative data source outside SESTAT, and is indicated by the
word "SYSTEM" for the source. In other cases, the survey contractor assigned codes to verbatim responses. A typical example involves location codes, either state or country, for universities
or colleges, or employer industry codes. The survey form asks the respondent to provide the name of the university at which a degree was earned, or the employer's name. When the survey
results are processed, the name of the university or employer is compared to an external lookup table containing university names and their location codes, or employers and
their location codes. When a matching university name or industry code is found, the corresponding code becomes part of the SESTAT database.
The industry codes in the SESTAT database are 2002 Census Industry codes, which are the same as those used on the Current Population Survey (CPS). The Census Bureau conducted
the coding of the data using the same procedures as the CPS. Any cases where the respondent had indicated working for government (any level) were not sent for coding, but were assigned
values based on other reported data. This variable identifes cases where the value for the industry code was a result of the coding operation, or was assigned by NSF.
