Quality and other technical information related to this item:
General
For the SDR, this item was not obtained directly from the survey form,
but was instead obtained from the sampling frame. The Survey of Earned
Doctorates (SED), an ongoing census of all U.S. doctorate recipients since
1942, was used to construct the sampling frame, and thus some information,
routinely collected by the SED, such as field of study and year of degree
award, was known about each respondent even before the SDR survey
data was collected.
For some surveys, the response for this data item was not obtained directly
from the survey form, but was instead available from an administrative
data source outside SESTAT, and is indicated by the word "SYSTEM" for
the source. In other cases, the survey contractor assigned codes to
verbatim responses. A typical example involves the location codes, either
state or country, for universities or colleges. The survey form asks
the respondent to provide the name of the university at which a degree
was earned. When the survey results are processed, the name of the
university is compared to an external lookup table containing university
names and their location codes. When a matching university name is found,
the corresponding location code becomes part of the SESTAT database.
