1993
In 1993, the question in the SDR survey that collected information on whether the respondent was on a postdoctoral appointment was changed from the previous years. Prior to 1993, postdoctoral status was one possible response choice to a work status question (the other options were full-time and part-time employment). In 1993 to make the SESTAT surveys consistent and as part of the redesign, a separate question worded as follows was included:

Was this job a postdoctoral appointment, that is, a temporary appointment in academia, industry, or government, primarily for providing continued education or training in research?

Although a definition of postdoctoral appointment was given in the new 1993 question, a much larger number than in previous years of scientists and engineers reported themselves in postdoctoral positions. Based on comparisons with previous years data and respondents' answers to other 1993 survey questions, the following respondents were edited out of the postdoctoral category:

• those with faculty rank (weighted number of 6,236)
• those self-employed or employed in less than college level (weighted number of 620)
• those who did not have research as primary or secondary work activity (weighted number of 3,714)
• those whose Ph.D. had been earned more than 20 years ago (weighted number 2,461)
• those earning adjusted salary in excess of $60,000 (weighted number 2,501).
The total weighted number edited out of the postdoctoral category was 9,534. This editing brought the edited number of postdoctoral appointments in 1993 to 18,224. The edited variable is intended only to improve the 1993 cross-sectional analysis. The same cautions as with other 1993 SDR data apply to time series analysis using this variable. Reinterview data suggests some uncertainty over what is meant by an educational institution. Item nonresponse was less than one percent across all surveys.
