For the 1995 National Survey of College Graduates (for experienced scientists and engineers whose highest degree was a bachelor or master's degree, or a foreign-earned PhDs), the domain is restricted to respondents who were working in applied or basic research, or development and design, during the week of April 15, 1995.

For the 1995 Survey of Doctorate Recipients, (for S&E PhDs earned in the United States), the domain is all respondents working on April 15, 1995, regardless of the nature of their work activities. Cross-survey comparability may be achieved by applying the 1995 NSCG restriction to the 1995 SDR survey population.
